Speaking Up

I haven’t posted much in awhile.

On paper, the gap makes sense. Walking tours are seasonal. Fall wrapped up. Winter arrived. The streets quieted. There wasn’t much to announce.

But silence doesn’t always mean nothing is happening.

Over the last few months, a lot has happened in the world. Much of it has been loud, frightening, and impossible to ignore. Immigration crackdowns. Daily headlines that make your stomach drop. Minnesota, in particular, has been heavy on my heart.

I’ve wrestled with how to write about this here. Follow Eric started as a personal blog. It still is. But it also became a way to document my travels. Then it grew to include walking tours that bring people together on Albuquerque’s sidewalks and markets. It was never intended to be a political megaphone.

So why speak up now?

Because I have a voice.

Because I have a platform, however modest.

Because silence can start to look a lot like approval.

I’ve been inspired by people who have shown up for boycotts and protests, by neighbors choosing inconvenience over indifference, by ordinary folks refusing to accept cruelty as routine. At the same time, I’ve been horrified by what I see nearly every day: videos and reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement using force in ways that raise serious questions about accountability and public safety.

Offering tours has inadvertently turned me into a student of history. Local history, yes, but history doesn’t stay neatly boxed inside city limits. When you spend time talking about how places were built, who they were built for, and who was excluded or harmed along the way, patterns start to emerge. You begin to recognize how quickly rights can erode. How easily fear can be weaponized. How fragile democratic norms can be when power goes unchecked.

I lead people through downtown Albuquerque and through the historic Rail Yards in the Barelas neighborhood. I ask them to imagine the past. I ask them to stand in public space and feel connected to the city around them. Every city deserves streets where people can gather without fear. We already struggle to maintain public safety as it is. Adding a heavily armed, unaccountable force that creates panic and chaos does not make communities safer. It fractures them.

Authoritarianism doesn’t always arrive with a single dramatic announcement. Sometimes it arrives piecemeal, dressed up as “order,” enforced through intimidation, and normalized through repetition.

The views I share here are my own. They do not reflect my employer or any organization I’m affiliated with. They come from my experiences, my values, and a growing concern for where this country is headed.

As for Follow Eric and the year ahead: tours are coming back in 2026. Walking, learning, gathering, and sharing stories still matter. I’ll have more details soon, and you’ll start seeing me when the markets return, including the Valentine Market at the Rail Yards.

History doesn’t just live in books.

It lives in our cities.

On our streets.

And in the choices we make about what we’re willing to notice, name, and challenge.

Hasta Pronto!

Downtown & Rail Yards Walking Tours – Balloon Fiesta 2025

October is my favorite time of year in Albuquerque. The mornings are crisp, the smell of roasted chile drifts through the markets, and balloons fill the sky. It’s also the perfect time to slow down, take a walk, and see the city in a new way.

Back on Track: Free Tours at the Rail Yards This Sunday

Yes, I’ve been a little MIA on the blog lately (don’t worry, I missed you too). Between work projects, daily life, and a much-needed California vacation, I haven’t been able to offer as many downtown walking tours as I’d like.

What better way to get back in the rhythm than History Day at the Rail Yards Market?

This Sunday, July 14, I’ll again be offering free walking tours highlighting the Rail Yards’ rich past — from its heyday as Albuquerque’s largest employer to the exciting rebirth it’s experiencing today.

Join me for a 40-minute tour starting at 10 a.m.

>>Reserve your spot here — or just swing by the meeting point near the Tender Repair Shop to hop on the tour.

Can’t make it that early? No worries — I’ll be around for the rest of the morning. If you miss the 10 a.m. tour, swing by and ask about the next one. I may offer additional rounds depending on interest.

Short on time? Just say hello and ask for my two-minute Express Tour — a bite-sized version with the main highlights and none of the walking.

Hope to see you there. As always, I’ll be the one with the bright blue and yellow umbrella.

>Registration and more info<

Hasta pronto!

P,S.

That California break I mentioned? It was exactly what I needed — a little rest, a little recharge, and now I’m ready to finish the tour season strong.

The 2025 Walking Tour Season is Here!

I’m excited to share that the 2025 season of my walking tours officially kicks off next weekend!

This season, I’m doing things a little differently. Instead of setting a full schedule months in advance, I’ll be announcing tours as they come together—giving me the flexibility to offer the best experiences possible while balancing life’s other priorities. If you’ve been waiting for your chance to join a tour (or come back for another one!), be sure to stay tuned for updates and announcements.

The first tour of the season is right around the corner:
Opening Day at the Rail Yards Market
Sunday, May 4, 2025
10:00 a.m.

Registration is open now! You can sign up and reserve your spot here.

I’m looking forward to another season of sharing Albuquerque’s stories with you—one step at a time.

An Unofficial Kickoff: Earlier this week, I had the honor of leading a special walking tour for visitors attending the Mother Road Consortium Summit, a national celebration of 100 years of Route 66. It was an incredible way to gear up for the season ahead. Here’s a snapshot from our gathering at the Clyde Hotel before we headed out to explore Downtown Albuquerque.

Thank you, as always, for your enthusiasm and support.

A Final Hurrah

It’s been a tough season for walking tours—a rewarding, enjoyable, and well-attended season, but a tough one nonetheless.

Many people assume that running these tours is my full-time job, but that’s far from the case. I actually have a day job, one I truly enjoy, which fills my 9-to-5 and often a bit beyond.

The idea for Follow Eric Walking Tours came from my own travel experiences—from street art in Lisbon to the vibrant markets of Mexico City, and to Barcelona, where I explored Civil War-era bunkers and marveled at Gaudí's architecture. By the summer of 2023, after years of brewing, this idea finally came to life. What started with downtown Albuquerque tours grew to include the historic Rail Yards and, this year, a new tour of downtown murals.

It’s been incredible to watch this passion project evolve, but balancing it with a full-time job has had its challenges. I aimed to make this season robust, with more frequency and variety, but sometimes managing it all stretched my limits. I appreciate your understanding when I needed to scale back or struggled with promotion, and I’m grateful to everyone who still showed up.

Thanks to your enthusiasm, attendance surged this year. We broke records, including over 20 of you joining our first Albuquerque Artwalk Murals Tour.

To wrap up this season with gratitude, I’ve decided to add one more tour as a final celebration. This will truly be the last chance to join a walking tour during the regular 2024 season.

I schedule the tour season to end alongside our local markets, and this Saturday marks the final day of the Downtown Growers’ Market. So, join me for one last Downtown Century Stroll on Saturday, November 2nd, at 9 a.m.

This will be your last chance to step back in time for a tour highlighting the 1920s architecture and lifestyle of Downtown Albuquerque.

I hope you’ll join me for this final hurrah to close out the 2024 season on a high note.

Reserve your spot here.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Hasta pronto!

One Year Ago

Today marks a special milestone: one year since I led my first walking tour.

Launching on June 17th last year was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. You may have heard me say that if I had waited until I felt 100% ready, I probably never would have started. It’s true. Making the start date public by posting it on the blog was scary, but it was the best decision.

It’s fun to look back on that first tour. It was me, some family members, and a few curious individuals who gave me reason to think free walking tours in Downtown Albuquerque might have potential.

I would go on to promote the heck out of my Then & Now Downtown Walking Tour, with an invitation for guests to “get to know Downtown Albuquerque’s history—on foot and in just one hour!”

The feedback and excitement from that first tour were overwhelming, set the tone for an incredible year and eventually lead to the development this year of three all new tour offerings. If you haven’t been on one yet, check the Walking Tours page for dates, descriptions, and registration.

Join me in June

The month of June holds a special place in my life.

It’s my birthday month, it’s the month to celebrate Pride, and now it marks the anniversary of Follow Eric Walking Tours.

When I launched my first tour on June 17th last year, I made a bold commitment to offer tours on a weekly basis, a promise I was able to keep through the end of the growers’ market season. This success was thanks to strategic partnerships with the Albuquerque Downtown Growers’ Market and the Rail Yards Market, as well as the overwhelmingly positive response from all of you.

This year, I’ve adjusted the schedule to strike a balance between offering regular tours and keeping some weekends free. Instead of weekly tours, I’m excited to present three distinct tours, each available once a month. This change allows me to provide more enriching and diverse experiences throughout the season.

Here’s the new schedule:

Downtown Century Stroll

  • When: Every Second Saturday through October
  • Description: Step back in time and explore the bustling streets of downtown Albuquerque as they were a century ago. This immersive tour offers a glimpse into the city's rich history and vibrant past.

Century of Steam Rail Yards Tour

  • When: Every First Sunday through October
  • Description: Delve into the vibrant history of Albuquerque's Rail Yards during the 1920s. This tour highlights the architecture, stories, and significance of these historic structures in shaping our city’s past.

Artwalk Murals Tour

  • When: Every Artwalk through September (ABQ Artwalk is generally held on the First Friday of the month, but not always)
  • Description: Dive into the colorful world of downtown murals during the monthly ABQ Artwalk festivities. These tours showcase the diverse array of murals adorning the streets of Downtown Albuquerque, providing insights into the artists and stories behind each masterpiece.

Make sure to mark your calendars for the specific dates each tour is offered so you don't miss out. I encourage you to book your spots early as each tour will only be available once a month.

For all the details on upcoming tours, including dates, descriptions, and registration links, visit the tour info page on my blog. Stay informed and secure your spot today!

Thank you for your continued support, and I can't wait to explore Albuquerque's fascinating history with you soon!

The biggest tour yet

I remember when I offered my first tour in June of 2023, I was thrilled to have nine guests show up—even if some of them were related to me.

The momentum kept up for a while, but there were some days with one or two, or sometimes zero guests, which was not entirely unexpected. I'm truly happy to give a tour for even just one person, but it's always exciting to see up to a dozen people show up.

So you can imagine my surprise when, by the end of last Friday's murals tour, we were up to 20 guests! The tour actually grew as folks joined in after the first couple of stops until we had a small crowd of nearly two dozen meandering through alleyways and grouping up in front of murals on Gold and Copper and behind buildings and in parking lots.

It was a motivating start to a busy weekend. Just a couple of days later, I launched the first of this year’s monthly Century of Steam Rail Yards Tours. It was a joyous occasion, marked by sunny weather and the familiar hum of excitement that accompanies the Rail Yards' Opening Day. It was heartening to see both new faces and familiar ones, some of whom have been part of the market for a decade. If you missed it, the Century of Steam Tours will be held on the Second Sunday of the month through the market season.

As we look ahead to this weekend, I hope you’ll make plans to join me for the Downtown Century Stroll this Saturday. It's your one chance this month to join me for a one-hour tour exploring Downtown Albuquerque through its 100-year-old architecture. We'll be meeting at Robinson Park, home of the Downtown Growers' Market, at 9 am. Don't miss out on this opportunity to dive into the rich history of our city!

Back in Action: A Recap of the Season Opener and a Look at What’s Next

This past Saturday marked the kickoff of our 2024 season, and I couldn't have been more thrilled to be back in action offering tours.

The experience of being back on the tour route, guiding new guests, and sharing my love for Albuquerque history was reinvigorating. It filled me with a sense of excitement and hope that this year might surpass even the success of the first season in 2023.

But the excitement doesn't stop there! I'm thrilled to announce not one, but two new tours coming your way.

First, get ready to step back in time with our Century of Steam Rail Yards Tour. Delve into the vibrant history of Albuquerque's Rail Yards during the 1920s with this immersive tour. Held once a month, this free walking tour offers participants an opportunity to explore the bustling world of the Rail Yards. Learn about the architecture, stories, and significance of these historic structures in shaping Albuquerque's past. The inaugural Century of Steam Tour will take place on Sunday, May 5th at 10 am to coincide with the Opening Day of the Rail Yards Market.

But that's not all! I'm excited to announce a partnership with ABQ Artwalk to bring you a free murals tour. Dive into the colorful world of downtown murals during the monthly ABQ Artwalk festivities. These walking tours will showcase the diverse array of murals adorning the streets of Downtown Albuquerque, providing insights into the artists and stories behind each masterpiece. The first of these tours will be at the next Artwalk on Friday, May 3rd, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. We'll meet at ArtStop—Artwalk’s outdoor marketplace featuring artisans, food vendors, and music at the corner of 7th and Gold. Special thanks to Visit Albuquerque for sponsoring these tours!

Readers can help further spread the word by following me on Facebook and Instagram. Following these pages is a great way to stay updated on upcoming tours and get behind-the-scenes glimpses.

Lastly, I want to encourage each of you to sign up for my newsletter. By joining my mailing list, you'll be the first to hear about upcoming tours, special events, and exclusive offers. Plus, it's a great way to stay connected with the Follow Eric community!

Thank you all for your continued support, and I can't wait to see you on our next adventure!

What’s in store for 2024

Spring is officially here and growers markets in Albuquerque are gearing up to start again, which means Follow Eric Walking Tours is looking to get back to business!

I am thrilled to share some exciting updates with you all. First and foremost, I want to say THANK YOU for your support in 2023. For every one of you who joined a tour or encouraged me along the way, you are the reason I’m bringing back tours in 2024. Your enthusiasm and support have been the driving force behind our success, and I can’t wait to kick off this next chapter with you all.

I don’t want to keep you in suspense any longer so here’s what I can tell you about this next season.

Walking tours are definitely coming back. Again, this is because of you and your encouragement. It was also a big boost when I received an award from Albuquerque the Magazine letting me know you all voted me in the Top 5 for Best New Business Ideas. THANK YOU!

There will be free options. In fact, the majority of the tours will remain free and my commitment is to always keep free options available. Payment is never required but you are always welcome to show your appreciation after a free tour with a tip based on your experience and to help make future tours possible. If you are interested in private tour options, those are in the works.

The frequency may change. I’ll be honest, weekly tours were a little tough for me to keep going but it was important to me to start strong with consistency to build strong momentum. I’m glad to say I think the momentum is there to allow for a few tours every month throughout the growers market season. Keep an eye out for exact dates soon.

There will be new tours! I’m excited to share that previous tours will be updated and new options will be added. The tours through the Rail Yards and around Downtown Albuquerque will be getting a refresh and a new focus, taking you back in time to life in Albuquerque 100 years ago. You’ll see what I mean when I officially announce the new slate of tours and don’t be surprised if there’s a new tour or two offered during the week and in the evenings as well, allowing you to experience the city in a whole new light.

If you're eager to stay in the loop and be the first to know about the new tour offerings, I encourage you to sign up for email updates using the form here.

Can I ask one last favor? If you took a tour in the past, would you please follow the same link and write a quick review? Sharing your experience helps others know what they can expect and offers the opportunity to improve future tours. It would mean a lot to me!

In the meantime, continue to follow along on Facebook and Instagram for sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes glimpses of what's to come. Thank you for your continued support, and I can't wait to embark on this next chapter of our journey together!

Valentine’s Day is coming, are you ready?

Like it or not, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and I’m choosing to do something I absolutely LOVE: free walking tours at the Rail Yards!

If you still haven’t taken one of my walking tours, this is your chance! I’ll be on site both days of the upcoming Rail Yards Valentine Market: Saturday, February 10th and Sunday the 11th.

This special market runs from 10 am until 2 pm both days and I’ll be offering free 30-minute tours on the hour, every hour.

The Rail Yards Market is the perfect place to find specialty goods like flowers, chocolates, and thoughtful gifts from local vendors. Check out all the details on the Rail Yards Valentine Market Facebook event page.

I hope you’ll make plans to take a tour or at least come say hello! It meant a lot to see many of you during December’s Holiday Market and I’m looking forward to another bustling weekend at the Rail Yards.

We did it! Your votes got me in Albuquerque the Magazine!

Remember way back when I kept hounding you for votes for Albuquerque the Magazine’s Best of the City Awards?

After voting closed, I didn’t hear anything regarding results. Not a single word for months. I was starting to think I didn’t make the cut.

Then, with only only days before the big awards party the magazine throws each December, I found out my little tours business would in fact have a spot among this year’s honors.

Thanks to you, Follow Eric Walking Tours earned a spot among the Top 5 awards for Best New Business Idea!

A big congratulations goes to Opera on the Menu on taking the top spot. I’m highly intrigued by this pair of local entrepreneurs who have started offering operatic dinner theater experiences through a combination of intimate live theater and farm-to-table dining.

As for my tours, they will resume in earnest when the regular market season starts up in April/May. Keep an eye on the blog here or make sure you’re following on Instagram and Facebook for the latest updates. I hope to see you on a tour soon.

Thank you for an incredible year. I’m closing out 2023 with a full heart and optimism for the new year.

Happy Holidays from Follow Eric!

Wherever you are, whatever you’re celebrating, I hope you’re enjoying this holiday season.

However you’re commemorating this season of gratitude, I want to take this time to share my heartfelt thanks for each and every one of you. Whether you’ve been around since 2009 during my off-the-wall Blogathon antics in Oklahoma or you’ve tuned in this year after learning about my free Albuquerque walking tours I kicked off over the summer, I’m grateful for every single one of you who take time out of your day to keep in touch.

Blogging has opened up my world to a whole cast of characters I may not have otherwise met: fellow bloggers, writers, travelers, nomads, peregrinos, tour guides, hostel owners, small business owners, entrepreneurs, restaurateurs, chefs, musicians, photographers, and artists of all kinds. Believe me when I say you all pop into my memories all the time as I sit down to a meal or browse through old photos and videos or share travel stories with friends. I hope you think of me from time to time as well.

To all of you, I wish happiness and health this holiday season.

Hasta pronto!

What’s next for Follow Eric Walking Tours?

You might be wondering what I have planned for future walking tours. Did you miss the boat on taking a free downtown Albuquerque walking tour or is there still a chance? When might tours return and will they still be free?

Not to fret, Follow Eric Walking Tours will return, and relatively soon.

First, this is all possible only because of the strong support and turnout that exceeded my expectations the past few months. When I started with my first tour in June, I hoped for a good turnout but knew it could just as easily flop. And while there were a few weekends without any guests, I consistently had at least a handful of folks show up for each and every tour.

A huge THANK YOU to each of you who came out for at least one tour this year—and an extra bit of thanks to those who took more than one tour. There were more than a few standouts who spread the word and recruited friends and became ardent ambassadors for keeping walking tours going in Downtown Albuquerque.

And for those of you who didn’t make it to a tour this year, many of you still showed your support through encouraging messages and I’m grateful for each of you.

So when will I see you on a tour? Your first chance is in just a couple of weeks.

The Rail Yards Holiday Market is coming up December 9th and 10th and brings with it another opportunity to explore the iconic steel and concrete structures once home to a team of locomotive repair workers. I’ll be offering at least one free Rail Yards tour on Saturday and on Sunday—maybe more if there’s enough demand.

Interested in a tour during the Holiday Market? Sign up to get more info here.

As for 2024 plans, I’m not quite ready to make those announcements yet but there will likely be some changes—improvements, I hope!—incorporating what I’ve learned from this past year. If you want to stay up to date, take a minute to sign up for future email updates.

And as always, you can follow along on Facebook and Instagram where I share the food I eat and the places I go.

Hasta pronto!

The End of Free Albuquerque Walking Tours

All good things must come to an end.

It’s been an incredible few months for my walking tours experiment but it’s almost time to close it out.

When I first wrote publicly on this blog about pursuing this passion project and launching my walking tours, it was a leap of faith and I truly did not know how it would go. I set a start date of June 17th and was thrilled when nearly a dozen guests showed up that Saturday morning—even if about half were related to me in some way. With the support of my family, the first Then & Now Downtown Albuquerque Walking Tour was a grand success.

The second week was also successful. Then the third week came around and… nobody showed up.

Not to be deterred by one slow weekend, I kept it up for a fourth Saturday and more guests showed up. Word started spreading through social media mostly and the momentum built up enough that I eventually expanded to include a Sunday tour. The Rails & Tales Albuquerque Rail Yards Tour has been a popular 30-minute tour for shoppers at the Rail Yards Market to get to know the rich history behind the iconic glass and steel structures in the Barelas neighborhood.

It’s all been incredibly rewarding.

Over the course of nearly three months, nearly a hundred guests have joined my free tour experiences. Some have completed both a Saturday and a Sunday tour which I take as a major compliment since these super guests enjoyed their initial experience enough to come back for more.

So why am I choosing to end tours that have been such a success?

Both the Downtown Growers’ Market and Rail Yards Market have been incredibly kind partners supportive of this whole walking tours idea. I doubt I would have had anywhere near the level of success so far without these organizations. It’s really only because these markets are already doing the heavy lifting of bringing life to our downtown parks and historic sites that I can continue to provide my walking tours on a weekly basis.

That’s why I’ll be choosing to stop the walking tours when these markets close for the 2023 season.

This isn’t the end for me. It’s simply an opportunity to pause and regroup through the winter season to figure out how to come back even better than before. I fully expect to restart walking tours in 2024 but I still haven’t quite finalized how it will look next year.

As of now, I plan to finish strong through the end of each market season. For my Rails & Tales Tour, that means ending when the Rail Yards Market wraps up with a final market day on Sunday, October 29th. The Downtown Growers’ Market doesn’t until until the following week so the last Then & Now Tour will be Saturday, November 4th.

A special note: There will be no Rails & Tales Tour on Sunday, October 1st as I will be out of town that day.

That means there are a limited number of opportunities for you to join a tour! If you’ve been waiting for cooler weather, now’s your time.

SIGN UP NOW!

Remember:

  • Final Rails & Tales Tour: Sunday, October 29th
  • Final Then & Now Tour: Saturday, November 4th

To those of you who have already joined a tour, THANK YOU for your support. I hope to see the rest of your faces soon!

Hasta pronto!

A Second Tour? Follow Eric Walking Tours is Expanding!

Follow Eric Walking Tours is expanding with the addition of a second weekly tour!

Building on the success of the Then & Now Downtown Walking Tour, I am thrilled to announce I’ll be adding a second free tour to the weekend lineup starting this week—which happens to be National Farmers Market Week.

I’ve enjoyed a great working relationship with growers’ markets here in Albuquerque. I couldn’t ask for a better starting point for my downtown tours than the Downtown Growers’ Market, where I kick off each Saturday at 9 am from right next to the info booth. I’ve also been working with another excellent market in town—the Rail Yards Market.

A few weeks ago, I offered a free walking tour on site in support of Rail Yards History Day. There was a healthy turnout and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. A few of you have since reached out to see if I would be offering another Rail Yards tour and I have good news for you.

This week, I am introducing a new regular offering: the Rails & Tales Rail Yards Walking Tour

This tour, like its downtown counterpart, is completely free to join with an option to tip at the end what you feel the experience is worth and to support future tours.

Rail Yards Tours start Sunday at 10 am, repeating weekly through remainder of the Rail Yards Market season which lasts through October.

Here’s the description and details:

RAILS & TALES ALBUQUERQUE RAIL YARDS TOUR

Discover the rich history of Albuquerque’s Rail Yards in just 30 minutes, the perfect way to enhance your market day!

  • When: Sundays at 10 am

  • Duration: 30 minutes

  • Meeting Point: Meet at the Rail Yards Market in front of the Growers’ Grove—the building to the west with the large gray facade.

Curious about the history of the iconic steel and concrete structures now home to the Rail Yards Market? This tour offers a glimpse into life in the first half of the 20th century when the Rail Yards employed a quarter of the city’s workforce, serviced 40 locomotives every month, and made Albuquerque a major hub along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Together, we’ll get an up close look at the buildings, most built between 1914 and 1924, and learn about their original purpose and what has happened to these facilities over the years. Whether you're a history buff or a market lover, this brief yet enriching walking tour is the ideal way to deepen your connection to Albuquerque's past while immersing yourself in its vibrant present, and a perfect start to your visit to the Rail Yards Market.

I hope you’ll make plans to join me for this tour. In fact, you can sign up right now to reserve your spot on one of the August dates.

Thank you all for your support of Follow Eric Walking Tours. I appreciate every like and share on Facebook and Instagram and every vote you cast in Albuquerque the Magazine’s Best of the City Awards and a very special thanks to each of you who have made it out on one of my walking tours.  It’s because of you all that I’ve been able to keep this passion project going.

If you haven’t made it on a tour, I hope to see you on one soon.
